Our initial plan was to go to Thomas Rock. Thomas Rock is a beautiful look out spot near Big Bay, about 23 miles from Marquette. You can take County Road 550 from Marquette towards Big Bay. Keep a lookout on the right side of the road for a brown sign that will point you towards Thomas Rock. You will take a left onto County Road 510, and the entrance for Thomas Rock is about a mile down 510 on the right. It is definitely a must see if you are coming into the area, and we thought that this would be the perfect site to take in all the beauty of Fall on this summer like day! Well, everyone else thought this was a great idea too, because when we pulled into the parking lot, there wasn’t a single spot left.
I just so happened to see a small brown sign about 500 yards from the entrance to Thomas Rock that pointed out the Huron Mountain Trails. We had never been on these trails before, so we decided to go this route instead.
After turning onto 510 look for a small green sign on the left side of the road pointing you onto the trails.
We weren’t sure if you could drive a car back there, so as you can see in the picture, we decided to park the truck at power plant across the road. For future reference, you can in fact drive down this little road. They even have a lovely sign about a quarter mile in pointing out a parking lot. However, the walk getting back to the trail wasn’t bad at all, and it was such a beautiful day, so we didn’t mind a little extra walking!
Right next to the sign for the parking lot, you will find another little green sign pointing you onto the Mountain View Trail.
We decided to take this trail, because it went straight up, and we knew we would be able to get a great view from up above! When I say trail, it is more like a dirt two track. There were definitely some tire tracks, I’m not sure if you are able to drive a car or just an ORV up there, but either way, I would recommend just walking.
The hike to the top is pretty short. I’m not going to guess on the distance, because I’m the world’s worst at gauging distance, but we made it to the top with 2 toddlers and a dog in under 10 minutes.
Once we got to the top, the views were spectacular! Although just up the street was crowded with people, there was no one else in sight here. It was like our own little private corner of the world. Our own hidden gem. We were able to sit and just soak in all the beauty and natural wonder.
This was such a quick little trip, but totally worth checking out! If you are going to visit Thomas Rock, I would absolutely recommended taking an extra half hour to visit this Mountain View, you won’t be disappointed!!
