Once you start your own Poshmark closet you can quickly turn your unwanted clothes into money! The site couldn’t be easier to use, and you don’t need anything fancy to start your closet. It is as easy as taking a picture on your smart phone and uploading it onto their ready to go template. Once a sale is made, Poshmark takes care of all the shipping logistics. All you have to do is print out the shipping label that they e-mail you, slap it onto your package and leave it for your mailman to pick up! Poshmark does charge a hefty 20% commission for all this ease, but it is well worth it to not have to worry about anything!
Creating Your Account
To get started on your closet, the first thing that you will do is download the Poshmark app and set up your account. If you use the code ESSUCCESS at login, they will give you $5 in Poshmark credits. It will ask you to fill in your shoe and dress size, as well as some of your favorite brands, so that they can match you up with closets similar to yours.
Hanging Your Item
Once your account is created, you are now ready to list your first item! After finding the item(s) you want to sell, you will want to hang it up to take a picture. I highly recommend using a white or light colored wall as your background. It will make the picture look really clean and free of any clutter. I prefer to use this hanging mannequin as well, It gives the clothes a more of a shape, so potential buyers can get a feel for what it will look like on.
If you don’t have/don’t want one, just using a clothes hanger is perfectly acceptable too! Command hooks are also a great tool to use because you can easily place a hook wherever you want, and take it down when you are done without doing any damage to the wall!
Good photographs are the key to selling! If you have good pictures in your listings, your items will sell faster and at higher prices. When you are ready to take your picture, make sure that your camera is on the “square” setting, like an Instagram picture. (You can also take a picture right from the app, but I prefer to use my iPhone camera app so I can photograph all the clothes I want to list at once). Natural lighting is always best for pictures, so if you can photograph near a window in the daylight, that will give you the best outcome. Once I started making a little money, I bought this photography lighting system for myself.
This system made a world of difference for my pictures, but isn’t necessary when you are just beginning your closet. Pictures are the most important part of your listing, so you want to make sure that your pictures are clear and that you are photographing everything important. You are allowed 8 pictures, and the more pictures you add the better your listing will be.
I suggest at minimum taking these pictures:
- The size tag
- The materials tag
- A close up of any unique detail that the item has or any flaws in the item
Don’t forget that your camera needs to be in square mode!
Once you have your pictures done, you may want to use your favorite photo editing app to brighten them up a little. My favorite editing app is an app called PicTapGo, when you use the “Lights On” filter, it really brightens everything up, especially your dark clothes. Dark colored clothes are tough to photograph well! Poshmark’s app also comes with built in filters that are free for you to use.
Listing Your Clothes
Once your pictures are complete, you are ready to list your clothes. When you open up the app on the very bottom you will see a camera icon labeled “sell”. Click on that, and it will open up your camera. (If you wanted to use the app to take your pictures, this is where you would do it.)
If you already took your pictures you can click on the folder on the bottom left. It will open up the pictures app from your phone. Select all the pictures that you want to use for this listing (up to 8) and hit next. It will then ask you to pick your cover shot. This is the first picture that buyers will see when they come to your listing. So make sure this is your best picture. Pick your picture, and hit next again. It will bring you to the filters page. You can play around with the filters and see if you like it. Since I like to use my own editor, I usually just stick with the “Original” option.
When you click next again, it will bring you to the template to fill out all the information about your item. You will want to make sure to give it a good title. Think about what you might type in the search bar if you were searching for this hoodie. In the descriptions, make sure to accurately describe your items. If there are any flaws in it, make sure that you include that there as well. See the picture below on how I filled out this section for my Under Armour hoodie.
When it comes to setting the price, you might want to do a quick search in the Poshmark app and see what other people are selling similar items for. This will give you a good gauge. You always want to start the price high. This gives you wiggle room when people submit you offers. Also, when you lower your price by 10% it will sometimes trigger a discounted shipping for people who have “liked” your item. So always start higher than you think you can get, you can always lower the price later.
When you have everything filled out, you can hit “next” one last time. It will give you the option to share this listing to your social media pages. Click which (if any) you would like to share to, and then hit “list”.
That’s it!! You have made your first listing! People can now buy your clothes!
I will do another post on sharing and parties, but for now, you have your first listing up and ready to go!!
If you make a closet, let me know, so that I can follow you!!
